TOP 10 AMAZON AUTOMOTIVE TOOLS
If you’re looking for a set of DIY automotive tools to purchase online or for a gift, then check out this top 10 best sellers list from Amazon.
1. PORTABLE SOCKET SET
FIRST ON THE LIST is a proper socket, ratchet, and wrench set, but not just any set. You’ll want something that’s portable.
There’s plenty to choose from Amazon, but you’ll want a kit that has enough options.

That’s were the Workpro 450 piece set comes in handy. It has a large variety of sockets, ratchets, wrenches, and specialty bits like Allen and Torx too.
The best thing about the Workpro is it’s rugged case. The top opens up like your traditional tool holders, but it also has 3 sliding drawers to help keep all your tools in the proper place. It’s also one of Amazon’s best sellers.
2. OBDII SCANNERS
PRETTY MUCH every car after 1996 that hasn’t been heavily modified will have an OBDII port under the driver side steering wheel.
If your check engine light comes on, then an OBDII scanner is the first tool you can use to help diagnose potential codes coming from your ECU.
The OBD codes can help pinpoint the issue without having to guess what may be wrong. One of the best options you can purchase is this all in one unit with its own screen like the Ancel AD310.
If you prefer for something a bit fancier, you can purchase an OBDII scanner thats bluetooth enabled. This allows the unit to wirelessly connect to your phone or tablet.
If you go the route on purchasing a bluetooth OBD2 scanner like the Veepeak, you’ll need another app installed on your phone.
Depending on the app, it could cost you. We use OBD Fusion because it has a nice real time dashboard display, but it has a one time cost of $10.
Check out our full review of the Veepeak and OBD Fusion here.
3. BACK SAVING AUTOMOTIVE CREEPERS
Third on the list will literally save you from aches and pains, which is a proper automotive creeper. I’d suggest not going down the cheap route.
You’ll want something that’s comfortable and super adjustable. Amazon has quite a few different options, but the one’s we prefer can be converted from a seat to a floor creeper.

We’ve owned the Pro-lift for over 3 years now and we love it due to the fact that it can be a seat or a full blown creeper.
If you want something a bit more fancy, check out these creeper options that have an adjustable seat and back. Which makes going from the floor to a seat super easy. For a full list of automotive creeper comparisons, read more here.

4. EASY AUTOMOTIVE LIGHTING
Fourth on the list is a good light that can fit into tight spaces. We recommend picking a few different sized magnetic lights to help keep any portion of your car visible while working in tight spaces.
First grab yourself a handheld unit which you can stick to any metal surface of your car. A small and portable swivel head style LED light will do the trick.
And when you’re working under the hood of the car, grab one of these hood Light LEDs. This type of light will provide much more visibility rather than having multiple smaller lights around the hood.
The Work Light option has magnets and hooks, so you could mount it in other places besides just the hood of your car.
5. SOLID CAR JACK
Fifth is a proper jack. Go for a low profile aluminum jack from Big Red and thank us later. The aluminum low profile setup can fit under most stock suspensions, even those modern lower profile cars.
6. SAFETY FIRST, JACK STANDS
Don’t forget to prop up the car with a matching pair of Big Red 3 Ton Jack Stands too. These are beefy and have a large solid base. They can hold 3 tons and should ALWAYS be used in combination with a car jack.
If you want additive security along with your car jack and jack stands check out this jack brace. It can provide an extra bit of safety for your regular hydraulic jack too.
Having jack stands plus this jack rod is well worth it the added costs.
7. TORQUE WRENCH
A torque wrench is an absolute requirement if you want to make sure all your bolts are properly fastened. This is critical, even when tightening wheel lug nuts.
Not properly fastening any bolts or wheel lug nuts can spell disaster. Even an entry level torque wrench is better than no torque wrench. Over tightening can also be avoided.
The last thing you want is not being able to remove a bolt or worse, cracking a bolt due to over tightening.
8. OIL CHANGING TOOLS
Next up on the list is a universal oil filter remover tool. Not every oil filter is torqued down correctly, so this tool can come in handy. It grips onto most modern sized car oil filters. You can then crank that oil filter off with a wrench or a ratchet.
Also don’t forget a fluid catch can for all that oil too. This one from Amazon is nice because it also has a neck which helps to pour the oil into smaller containers for proper disposal at your closest automotive stores.
9. BREAKER BARS
Item number 9 is a nice and solid 1/2 Inch Drive 24 in. Breaker Bar. You’ll want to use one of these to break loose stubborn bolts if you want your regular ratchets to last.
This breaker bar can also save you from grabbing that spare pipe laying around and making a cheater bar. Cheater bars aren’t good because they can put more stress on your tools than they can handle.
The last thing you want to do is go flying across the room because you broke your favorite ratchet or wrench while trying to use a cheater bar.
10. PLIERS SET WORTH IT
And don’t forget a pliers set. Most people overlook pliers.
And no, you don’t use them on bolts, that’s what the Workpro socket set is for. These pliers will come in handy when trying to remove stubborn hose clamps and other weird clamping systems your car might have.
This set from Workpro sells around 2,000 units a month on Amazon, which makes it a fan favorite. With ton’s of different types of automotive uses cars, a set of pliers will save you tons of time. Plus you can use them around the house too.
BONUS: Grab are these specialty pliers for hose clamps that you just can’t get pliers around.
PORTABLE STORAGE OPTIONS
Keeping all your tools organized can be a pain. And I hate those stupid one off plastic cases tools come in.
So buy one or more of these small rugged tool bas from Rough Enough to store all the smaller tools in. You can buy the larger or small bag, but they also sell a bund too.
They make for the perfect gift to add along with any tools on this list.
