SMALL WELDING PROJECTS

With around $600 dollars for a nice welder setup, you could make up to $6K.

My wife and I first learned how to weld by fixing rust on our projects cars. As we continued making progress on other parts of our project cars, the welder mostly sat idle.

Then I wondered, could we turn our $600 welding investment into $6000?

If we tackled a few different welding projects, we could definitely bring in some cash. So we’re going to break down how to start small welding jobs that will bring you in some cash.

Before we dive in check out our welder comparison tool which can help save you $$$ on a welder.

SMALL WELDING PROJECTS

When you have a welder its easy to make friends, especially car friends. Most of the time, DIY automotive enthusiasts stick to mechanical repairs and upgrades which make friends with a welder priceless.

$250 WELDING PROJECTS

We just so happen to have multiple local grassroots drifting tracks near us and welded diffs are in high demand. You can charge up to $250 to drain a diff, clean it out, weld it up, fill, and seal it all up.

Doing that four times equals $1,000. You can also perform custom muffler work which also requires a welder. You can charge up to $250 per job.

$500 WELDING PROJECTS

Another fun project that requires some welding and pays well is custom furniture. Especially gear head furniture. We’ve been stock piling parts and have more than enough to make a set of bar stool style seats. Custom seats can typically go for at least $500 a set depending on how fancy you get.

Here’s an example:

$1000+ WELDING PROJECTS

Once you’ve finished making custom bar stool seats you can move onto custom welded car parts art. We have tons of extra timing chains, gears, old tools, and pistons. These parts would be more than enough to make some custom automotive artwork.

Smaller welded items like the one below can go for $150 or more.

Larger custom commission welded art can go for much more, around $500-$1000. The great thing about welding custom items is that you can find tons of parts for FREE from mechanics that don’t have time to drop dead parts off at the junkyard. This might be the fastest way to hit that $6K mark.

WELDING PROJECT PROFIT

Before we tally the final welding project profits, lets add up the welding gear expenses.

Here’s the minimum gear required:

  • Eastwood Multi Process MP140i Welder (Comes with 0.23 MIG wire and all parts minus gas) - Sometimes on sale for $500. Use code THEBUILD10 for 10% off your www.eastwood.com purchase

  • 40CF Welding Bottle - $20 on Facebook Marketplace. Used is fine because when you get gas they swamp your tank with a used one anyways…

  • Welding Gloves - $15

  • Welding Mask - $70

Total Expenses: $605

Now lets add up the list of welding jobs:

  • Welded Diffs $250 x 4 = $1000

  • Muffler jobs $250 x 2 = $500

  • Custom Seat of Seats $500 x 2 = $1000

  • Welded Commission Art Work $1000 x 3 = $3000

Welding Projects Total: $5,500

Total Income Minus Expenses: $4,895

VISUAL LEARNER

If you’re a visual learner, we have a video that shows you how to get started with MIG welding. We cover setting up the gas, welder, and welder settings.
